Amana Appliance Repair: Common Problems and Support

What Amana washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher and range owners report most, what each symptom usually points to, where the model tag is and when to call.

Reviewed October 17, 2026 4 sources

Amana is Whirlpool Corporation's value brand. Its washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges are simpler versions of Whirlpool designs with fewer cycles and features, which is why they are common in rentals, starter homes and anywhere a basic, serviceable appliance is wanted.

This page covers the problems Amana owners report most, what each points to, where the model tag is, how to get the manual, how the warranty is handled, and when an independent repair business is the right call. It is not affiliated with Amana or Whirlpool Corporation.

Callbook is not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by Amana. This page is written for owners of its products; warranty service may need to go through the maker.

What people own

  • Top-load washers with an agitator and matching electric and gas dryers.
  • Front-load washers and dryers on some models.
  • Top-freezer, side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators.
  • Dishwashers with front controls.
  • Freestanding electric and gas ranges.
  • Over-the-range microwaves and chest freezers.

Common problems and what they usually point to

Top-load washer will not spin or drain

A lid switch or lid lock, a worn drive belt, a clogged drain pump or a failed shifter actuator on newer designs. These are the same parts used in Whirlpool top-loaders of the same age.

Washer fills slowly or will not fill

Clogged inlet screens on the fill hoses, a failed water inlet valve or a pressure switch and hose problem. Check both supply taps are fully open first.

Dryer runs but does not heat

A restricted vent, then a heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat on an electric dryer, or an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil on a gas dryer.

Dryer noisy or drum not turning

A broken belt, worn drum rollers, a failed idler pulley or a worn rear bearing. Rollers and the idler are usually replaced as a set.

Refrigerator not cooling or freezer frosting

A defrost heater, thermostat or control, a failed evaporator fan, dirty condenser coils or a torn gasket. If the compressor runs hot and nothing cools, the sealed system is next.

Range element or burner not working

A failed surface element or infinite switch on an electric range, or a dirty igniter, spark module or a burner cap out of place on a gas range. An oven that will not heat usually needs a bake element or an oven igniter.

Model numbers, manuals and warranty

  • The model and serial tag is a sticker under the lid or around the door opening of a washer, inside the door opening of a dryer, on an inside wall of a refrigerator, on the edge of a dishwasher door, and behind the oven door or inside the drawer of a range.
  • Amana's product help site (producthelp.amana.com) is organized by Laundry, Refrigeration, Cooking and Dishwashers. Manuals and use-and-care guides are found by model number, and the guide includes the troubleshooting section for that model.
  • A new Amana appliance carries a limited warranty from the date of purchase (commonly one year on parts and labor for defects), with the exact terms on the warranty page of the manual. Warranty repairs are arranged through Amana and its authorized servicers; an outside repair inside the first year is usually not reimbursed.
  • Scheduled repairs run through W Service, which lists 1-844-667-6055 and online booking for Amana products. Customer service contact options are listed on the Amana product help site.
  • Register the product after purchase so proof of purchase is on file for a later claim.

When a local repair business is the right call

  • The appliance is out of its one-year warranty and you want a local repair quote. On a basic appliance, the quote is often small enough that repair makes sense.
  • A refrigerator needs sealed-system work (compressor, evaporator, refrigerant), which requires EPA-certified refrigerant handling.
  • A gas dryer or gas range needs igniter, valve or gas-line work.
  • A washer needs a gearcase, tub bearings or a drive motor, which means a teardown.
  • You manage a rental and want the same business to handle several units with shared parts.

Questions people ask

Are Amana parts the same as Whirlpool parts?

Often, yes. Amana appliances are built by Whirlpool Corporation on shared platforms, so belts, lid switches, pumps, elements and many boards are the same parts. A technician checks by model number.

Is an Amana appliance worth repairing?

Usually, for a single common failure such as a belt, element, igniter, pump or lid switch. The parts are inexpensive and widely stocked. A sealed-system failure or several failures in a row on an older unit are where replacement starts to make more sense.

Does an independent repair affect the Amana warranty?

The maker will not pay for repairs it did not arrange and can decline to cover damage caused by outside work, but cannot void the whole warranty because someone else serviced the appliance. Inside the warranty, start with Amana.

My Amana dryer takes two cycles. Is the dryer broken?

Most of the time the vent is the problem. Clean the lint filter, check the duct behind the dryer for crushed sections and lint, and check the outside hood. If the vent is clear and the air is still cool, a heating part has failed.
