GE Appliances is based in Louisville, Kentucky and has been owned by Haier since 2016. It sells appliances under the GE, GE Profile, Cafe, Monogram, Haier and Hotpoint names in the United States. Factory service for those brands is now run through a GE Appliances service arm called Bodewell.
This page covers the problems GE owners report most, what each points to, where the model and serial tag is, how to get the manual and error codes, how the warranty is handled, and when an independent repair business is the better choice. It is not affiliated with GE Appliances or Haier.
Callbook is not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by GE Appliances. This page is written for owners of its products; warranty service may need to go through the maker.
What people own
- Top-freezer, side-by-side, bottom-freezer and French door refrigerators.
- Top-load and front-load washers, electric and gas dryers, and combination washer dryers.
- Dishwashers under the GE, GE Profile and Cafe names.
- Freestanding, slide-in and double-oven ranges in electric, gas, dual-fuel and induction.
- Wall ovens, cooktops and over-the-range microwaves.
- Window air conditioners, dehumidifiers and chest freezers.
Common problems and what they usually point to
Refrigerator not cooling or cooling unevenly
A defrost failure that has blocked the evaporator with frost, a failed evaporator or condenser fan, dirty condenser coils, or a damper stuck between compartments. If the compressor runs constantly and both sections are warm, the sealed system is the next suspect.
Ice maker or water dispenser stopped
A filter that is overdue, a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve or a failed ice maker. On models with a dispenser, the dispenser solenoid or a frozen line in the door is a common cause of no water.
Top-load washer will not agitate or spin
A failed lid switch or lid lock, a worn drive belt, a failed mode shifter or clutch, or a motor problem. Many GE top-loaders show a diagnostic code on the display that narrows the search.
Dryer not heating or taking two cycles
A restricted vent is the first thing to rule out. After that, an electric dryer usually needs a heating element, high-limit thermostat or thermal fuse; a gas dryer usually needs an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil.
Range or oven error codes
GE ovens show F codes that point to the oven temperature sensor, a door lock problem or the electronic control. A bake or broil element that has visibly failed is a straightforward part swap; a control board is model-specific.
Model numbers, manuals and warranty
- GE Appliances keeps a model and serial locator for each product type. On a top-freezer refrigerator the tag is inside the fresh-food section near the top or behind the crisper drawers; on a dishwasher on the front inside edge or the door edge; on a dryer on the inside front face of the drum opening; on a range behind the oven door, under the control panel or behind the drawer. GE model numbers always begin and end with a letter.
- Manuals, use-and-care guides and installation instructions are on the Appliance Manuals page. Enter the model number to download them; the owner's manual includes the troubleshooting and error-code section.
- A new GE Appliances product carries a limited warranty from the date of purchase, with terms set out on the warranty page of your manual. In-warranty repairs are arranged through GE Appliances factory service (Bodewell); an independent repair inside the warranty period is normally not reimbursed.
- Factory service is scheduled online through the GE Appliances service page or by phone at 833-426-3393. GE says its repairs carry a one-year warranty on parts used and a 30-day limited labor warranty.
When a local repair business is the right call
- The appliance is out of warranty and you want a local technician and a quote rather than factory service or a replacement.
- A refrigerator or freezer needs sealed-system work (compressor, evaporator, refrigerant leak), which requires EPA-certified refrigerant handling.
- A gas range, cooktop or gas dryer needs igniter, valve or gas-line work.
- A washer needs a transmission, tub bearings, a drive motor or a suspension rebuild.
Questions people ask
Who does GE Appliances warranty repairs?
GE Appliances factory service, which now operates under the Bodewell name. Schedule through the GE Appliances service page or by phone. Inside the warranty period, start there; outside it, any qualified business can do the work.
Can an independent technician get GE parts?
Yes. GE Appliances parts are sold through its own parts store and through appliance parts distributors, so common repairs are not usually held up by parts.
What do the F codes on my GE oven mean?
They point to a fault the control has detected, most often the oven temperature sensor, the door lock circuit or the control board itself. The code list for your model is in the owner's manual on the GE Appliances manuals page.
How do I tell how old my GE appliance is?
The serial number encodes the month and year of manufacture in its first two letters. GE Appliances support or a technician can read it. The age helps decide whether a repair is worth the money.
