Maytag Appliance Repair: Common Problems and Support

What Maytag washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher and range owners report most, what each symptom usually points to, where the model tag is and when to call.

Maytag is a Whirlpool Corporation brand best known for laundry. Current Maytag washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges are built on Whirlpool platforms, so parts and service procedures overlap heavily with Whirlpool models of the same age.

This page covers the problems Maytag owners report most, what each points to, where the model tag is, how to get the manual and error codes, how the warranty works, and when an independent repair business is the right call. It is not affiliated with Maytag or Whirlpool Corporation.

Callbook is not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by Maytag. This page is written for owners of its products; warranty service may need to go through the maker.

What people own

  • Top-load washers with a deep-fill option and agitator, and front-load washers.
  • Electric and gas dryers, and stacked laundry centers.
  • Commercial-style laundry sold for home use.
  • French door, side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators.
  • Dishwashers with stainless tubs and front or top controls.
  • Freestanding electric and gas ranges and over-the-range microwaves.

Common problems and what they usually point to

Top-load washer will not spin, or stops mid-cycle

A lid lock that has failed, a shifter actuator or a drive belt on newer designs, or a clogged drain pump that keeps the washer from reaching spin. The code on the display, if any, narrows it down.

Washer leaking from the front or underneath

A split drain hose, a worn door boot on a front-loader, a cracked tub-to-pump hose or a failed pump seal. Water at the back usually comes from the fill hoses or the standpipe.

Dryer not heating or showing a vent code

A restricted vent is the first suspect and the most common cause of long dry times. After that, an electric dryer needs a heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat; a gas dryer needs an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil.

Dryer noisy: squealing, thumping or grinding

Worn drum rollers, a failed idler pulley or a worn drum bearing. These are wear parts on any dryer and are usually replaced together.

Refrigerator not cooling or ice maker stopped

A defrost problem, a failed evaporator fan, dirty condenser coils or a damper. For ice, an overdue filter, a frozen fill tube or a failed ice maker module. A sealed-system fault is the last thing a technician rules in.

Model numbers, manuals and warranty

  • The model and serial tag is a sticker: under the lid or around the door opening on a washer, inside the door opening on a dryer, inside the fresh-food section of a refrigerator, on the edge of a dishwasher door, and behind the oven door or inside the drawer on a range.
  • Maytag's product help site (producthelp.maytag.com) is organized by Laundry, Refrigeration, Cooking and Dishwashers, with articles on symptoms and codes. Manuals are found by model number through the Maytag manuals and literature page.
  • A new Maytag appliance carries a limited warranty from the date of purchase (commonly one year on parts and labor for defects), and Maytag advertises a longer limited parts warranty on specific components (such as the drive motor and wash basket on select washers) for some models. The exact terms are on the warranty page of your manual. Warranty repairs are arranged through Maytag and its authorized servicers; an outside repair inside the warranty period is usually not reimbursed.
  • Maytag lists customer service at 1-800-344-1274 plus live chat. Scheduled repairs run through W Service, which lists 1-844-667-7017 and online booking.

When a local repair business is the right call

  • The appliance is out of warranty and you want a local repair quote rather than a replacement.
  • A longer parts-only warranty applies and you need a technician to install the part and bill the labor.
  • A refrigerator needs sealed-system work (compressor, evaporator, refrigerant), which requires EPA-certified refrigerant handling.
  • A gas dryer or gas range needs igniter, valve or gas-line work.
  • A washer needs tub bearings, a gearcase, a drive motor or suspension parts, which means a teardown.

Questions people ask

My Maytag washer has a 10-year limited parts warranty. What does that cover?

On models where it applies, it covers specific parts named in the warranty, typically the drive motor and the wash basket, for parts only. Labor is covered during the first year. Read the warranty sheet for your model and confirm with Maytag before scheduling service.

Are Maytag and Whirlpool parts interchangeable?

Often, yes. Both brands are made by Whirlpool Corporation and many current models share pumps, belts, lid locks, elements and boards. A technician checks by model number rather than by brand.

My dryer runs but takes two cycles. Is it broken?

Most of the time it is the vent, not the dryer. Clean the lint filter, check the duct behind the dryer for crushed sections and lint, and check the outside hood. If the vent is clear and the dryer still runs cool, a heating part has failed.

Does an independent repair affect my Maytag warranty?

The maker will not pay for repairs it did not arrange, and it can decline to cover damage caused by outside work. It cannot void the whole warranty just because someone else serviced the appliance. Inside the warranty, start with Maytag; outside it, any qualified business can do the work.
