Speed Queen is the home laundry brand of Alliance Laundry Systems, based in Ripon, Wisconsin. The company builds commercial washers and dryers for laundromats and sells home versions of the same machines: top-load and front-load washers and matching dryers, with metal parts where most brands use plastic and simpler controls than the competition.
This page covers the problems Speed Queen owners report most, what each points to, where the serial plate is, how to get the manual, how the warranty works, and when an independent repair business is the right call. It is not affiliated with Speed Queen or Alliance Laundry Systems.
Callbook is not affiliated with, authorized by or endorsed by Speed Queen. This page is written for owners of its products; warranty service may need to go through the maker.
What people own
- Classic and Commercial-series top-load washers with an agitator (TC5, TR series and similar).
- Front-load washers (FF series and similar).
- Electric and gas dryers in matching finishes (DC5, DR series and similar).
- Stacked washer and dryer units.
- Commercial coin and card-operated machines (sold separately, not covered on this page).
Common problems and what they usually point to
Top-load washer not agitating or spinning
A failed lid switch, a worn drive belt or a problem in the transmission or motor. Speed Queen top-loaders use a belt-driven transmission rather than a direct drive, so a belt is often the first thing a technician checks.
Washer not draining or leaking
A clogged drain hose, a failed drain pump or, on older machines, a worn pump seal. Water at the back usually comes from the fill hoses.
Dryer not heating
A restricted vent first. Then a heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat on an electric dryer, or an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil on a gas dryer.
Dryer noisy or drum not turning
A broken belt, worn drum rollers, a failed idler pulley or a motor problem. Rollers and the idler are wear parts on any dryer.
Controls not responding
On electronic-control models, a failed control board or a stuck membrane switch; on mechanical-timer models, a worn timer. Both are model-specific parts ordered by model and serial number.
Model numbers, manuals and warranty
- The model and serial number are on a plate on the machine: typically under the lid or at the top of the back panel on a top-load washer, inside the door opening on a front-load washer or dryer, or on the back panel. Speed Queen asks for the serial number to register the machine and check the warranty.
- Manuals and downloads are on the Speed Queen support site, searched by model number. The owner's manual includes the troubleshooting section, and printed literature can be requested for some serial ranges.
- Speed Queen says its home washers and dryers carry three-, five- or seven-year warranties depending on the model, and it states that the warranty is verified by serial number. Read the warranty sheet for your model for what is covered in which years. Warranty service is arranged through Speed Queen's authorized servicers, found by ZIP code on its site; an independent repair inside the warranty period is usually not reimbursed.
- Homeowner support is listed at (800) 552-5475, Monday to Friday, Central time, plus an online contact form. The site also has a parts dealer locator and a genuine parts store.
- Register the machine after purchase. Speed Queen ties registration to the serial number and uses it for warranty verification.
When a local repair business is the right call
- The machine is past its warranty and you want a local technician and a quote. Speed Queen machines are built to be repaired, so a repair is usually the sensible choice.
- The warranty is still in force but there is no authorized servicer in reach, and you want to understand your options before paying for an outside repair.
- A gas dryer needs igniter, valve or gas-line work.
- A washer needs a transmission, tub bearings or a motor, which means a teardown.
- The fix is a control board or timer that has to be ordered by model and serial number.
Questions people ask
How long is the Speed Queen warranty?
Speed Queen states three-, five- and seven-year warranties across its home models. Which term applies, and what each year covers, depends on the model, so check the warranty sheet for yours and verify the serial number with Speed Queen before scheduling service.
Can an independent technician repair a Speed Queen?
Yes. Speed Queen sells genuine parts through its own parts program and through dealers, and the machines are mechanically simpler than most. Inside the warranty period, use an authorized servicer so the repair is covered.
Why does my new Speed Queen top-loader use so little water?
Current models meet federal efficiency standards and fill based on the cycle selected. The owner's manual explains which cycles use more water and how to use them.
Is a Speed Queen worth repairing after ten years?
Often, yes. The company builds these machines for a long service life and stocks parts for them, so a belt, pump, element or timer is a reasonable repair. A transmission or a motor on a very old machine is where a quote matters.
