Lennox Air Conditioner and Furnace Repair: Owner Guide

Problems Lennox owners report most, where the serial plate is, how to look up a Lennox warranty, what registering changes, and when to call a technician.

Lennox sells its residential equipment through dealers and keeps a tighter grip on parts than most makers, which matters to owners: many Lennox components are specific to the brand and are stocked through Lennox parts centers rather than general supply houses.

This page is for the person who owns the system. It covers the equipment people typically have, what tends to fail, where to read the model plate, how Lennox's warranty and registration work, and when to call a repair business rather than the manufacturer. Callbook is not affiliated with Lennox.

What people own

  • Dave Lennox Signature Collection air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces, the top tier with variable-capacity models
  • Elite series and Merit series air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces
  • Air handlers and evaporator coils that match the outdoor unit
  • Packaged units that put heating and cooling in one outdoor cabinet
  • Ductless mini-split systems
  • iComfort thermostats and controls, including Wi-Fi models that show system status and alerts

Common problems and what they usually point to

Outdoor unit hums or clicks but does not run

The run capacitor or the contactor. A weak capacitor stalls the fan or makes the compressor trip on overload; a pitted contactor fails to pass power when the thermostat calls. Both are inexpensive, both are on live circuits, and both are technician parts.

System runs all day and never reaches the set temperature

A refrigerant leak is the common cause once airflow problems are ruled out. Signs are ice on the indoor coil or the copper line and an outdoor unit that sounds normal while the air at the vents is barely cool. Repairing the leak and weighing in the charge is licensed work.

Weak or no airflow at the vents

The indoor blower motor or the board that drives it. Variable-speed units use an electronic motor whose control module is replaced as a unit. A badly clogged filter or a coil matted with dust produces the same symptom and should be checked first.

Furnace shuts down and the iComfort control or LED shows a code

Lennox furnaces report fault codes on the control board LED and, on communicating systems, on the thermostat screen. The causes behind the codes are familiar: a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, a pressure switch that will not close, a limit opening because of low airflow, or a blocked condensate trap.

iComfort thermostat shows a communication error or goes blank

Communicating Lennox systems run on a data link between the thermostat, furnace or air handler, and outdoor unit. A loose connection, a failed board or a power interruption to one component can take the whole system offline until it is reset or repaired.

Model numbers, manuals and warranty

  • The model and serial numbers are on the rating plate: on the outdoor unit near the line connections, on a furnace inside the upper door, and on an air handler inside the panel. Lennox's warranty lookup works from the serial number alone.
  • Lennox's residential support center has a model number lookup, FAQs and a dealer search. Owner's manuals are found by model, and the furnace fault-code legend is on the label inside the furnace door as well as in the manual.
  • Lennox's registration page asks owners to register eligible equipment within 60 calendar days of installation (or closing, for a new home) to activate extended coverage; the same window applies to changing the default coverage in states that regulate registration-based warranties. Lennox calls this program Warranty Your Way.
  • According to Lennox's warranty page, the factory warranty covers parts only. With registration, owners can select up to three years of labor coverage; otherwise labor and the service call are the owner's cost.
  • To check coverage, enter the serial number on the warranty lookup page, or use the serial or registration number plus your last name to retrieve the warranty certificate.
  • Lennox's contact page offers chat, a contact form and a dealer search rather than a published consumer phone number. Lennox-specific parts are supplied through Lennox dealers and parts centers.

When a local repair business is the right call

  • Refrigerant leaks, recharges and coil replacements. Federal law limits this work to EPA Section 608 certified technicians.
  • Gas furnace faults, a gas smell, soot or a carbon monoxide alarm. For gas, leave the house and call the utility first.
  • A buzzing, humming or breaker-tripping outdoor unit. The capacitor and contactor sit on live high-voltage circuits.
  • A warranty part. Lennox parts come through dealers and the labor is usually billed even when the part is free.
  • A communicating (iComfort) system showing errors. The diagnosis needs the dealer software and documentation.

Questions people ask

Does Lennox cover labor?

Only if you selected labor coverage when registering. Lennox's page says the factory warranty is parts only and that registered owners can choose up to three years of labor coverage. Without that, labor is yours.

Can a non-Lennox company repair my Lennox system?

Yes. Any licensed HVAC contractor can diagnose and repair it. For brand-specific parts, the contractor orders from a Lennox parts center, and warranty parts are processed through Lennox dealers, so expect either route to involve a short wait for parts.

Why does my iComfort thermostat say the system is offline?

Usually a communication fault between components, a power interruption or a failed board. Try nothing beyond checking the breakers; the fix is a technician visit with the diagnostic software.

What should I write down before calling for service?

The model and serial numbers from the plate, the fault code shown on the thermostat or the LED, when the problem started and what the system does when it fails. That saves diagnostic time on site.
